General Info
A visa is required by all visitors to Kuwait except nationals of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries. Since 2004, visa restrictions for entry into Kuwait have been relaxed and the new regulations have made it a lot easier to get in. It's now possible for passport-holders from many countries around the world to simply pick up a 3 month visa upon arrival at Kuwait International Airport.
There are several types of visas you can get:
-
Visit - valid for 1 month
-
Business - valid for 6 months
-
Transit - valid for 7 days
-
Tourist - valid for 3 months
-
Residence - valid 10 years (but your civil ID has to be renewed every year)
On this page we'll just be dealing with the first four types of visa, but to get more information on residency issues, follow the link above or click [here]

Getting a three month tourist visa couldn't be simpler for citizens of the 34 countries listed below. All you need to do is have a valid passport and 3 KD. You can get it when you arrive at Kuwait International Airport. You'll find the visa issuing place upstairs, before you have to go downstairs again to collect your luggage and go through passport control. Simply take a ticket (it's on the left) and wait for your number to be called. Your passport will be copied, you'll hand over 3 KD and get a receipt and then collect your visa which will be valid for three months from the time of entry. It couldn't be easier! (if your country isn't on the list, you can still get a 3 month visa from Kuwait Airways offices)

Getting a visit visa is more complicated than getting a tourist visa, but here are the details anyway! You can get a visit visa 90 days before you use it, but once you enter Kuwait, it's only valid for 30 days (and if you overstay you have to pay a hefty 10 Kd per day!). A visit visa costs 3 KD, but you don't have to pay anything when you actually enter the country. You can get a visit visa for a business visitor or for a relatve. It should take only 2 days to process. To get a business visit visa, you need:
- Visa application and security form completed by the sponsor
- Copy of visitor's passport
- Copy of sponsor's signature (as registered for business purposes)
- Copy of letter of invitation from the sponsor to the business visitor stating purpose of the visit
To get a relative a visit visa, you need:
- Visa application and security from completed by the foreign resident who's sponsoring the relative
- Copy of visitor's passport
- Original and copy of sponsor's passport, civil ID and work permit
- Recent salary certificate from sponsor's employer (min.450 KD for public sector employee and min. 650 KD for private sector employee)
- Authenticated proof of family relationship
Usually a visitor goes to a Kuwaiti embassy to get his visa processed and passport stamped before travelling to Kuwait. But a Kuwaiti sponsor can use a faxed copy of the visitor's passport to get the visa in Kuwait. The sponsor will then fax the visa copy back to the visitor, enabling him to travel to Kuwait, and meets him at the airport with the original visa. There's a special counter set up in airport just for this.
Hotels also get visitors visit visas, but they obviously expect you to stay at their hotel if you use this service!

You can get a transit visa which is valid for a maximum stay of 7 days from a Kuwaiti Embassy or Consulate abroad, or from one of the Port Authorities actually in Kuwait. It costs 2 KD but you must:
- have a valid passport
- a valid visa (if necessary) for your next country of destination
- a confirmed onward ticket (if you work for a ship or an airline, you don't need one)
International truck drivers can also get multiple entry transit visas.
